Child Support

Pennsylvania, like other states, has established its own guidelines for child support and a basic formula to calculate the amount. The formula itself looks to a number of factors, many of which are not subject to debate (the number of children, their ages, prior support obligations). As mentioned above, however, the income (including assets) matters most.

Alimony

Also called spousal support in some states, alimony is traditionally thought of as monthly financial support paid by one former spouse, to the other, for either a limited or indefinite period of time. Pennsylvania does things differently. Here, courts often award a larger share of the property settlement to the spouse who is more financially disadvantaged.

Spousal support, on the other hand, is temporary support awarded to one spouse or the other for the time period while the divorce is still pending.
