How Much Support Can
I Expect to Pay or Receive?

Divorce Lawyers in Pennsylvania

The end of a marriage is rarely the end of each spouse's involvement with the other, especially where children are involved. Because of that, and because spouses can be in very unequal financial positions after the marriage ends, child support or alimony are often awarded as part of the divorce settlement.

The biggest factor in determining how large or small those amounts will be?

Income.

Our attorneys understand the importance of income to the support equation. And whether you expect to pay support or receive it, they will work hard to see that income figures are calculated to produce the fair result you seek. Child Support

Pennsylvania, like other states, has established its own guidelines for child support and a basic formula to calculate the amount. The formula itself looks to a number of factors, many of which are not subject to debate (the number of children, their ages, prior support obligations). As mentioned above, however, the income (including assets) matters most.

Our lawyers are skilled at locating hidden assets, bank accounts and cash, and at establishing earning capacity and whether one spouse or the other is working to his or her full earning potential.

Alimony

Also called spousal support in some states, alimony is traditionally thought of as monthly financial support paid by one former spouse, to the other, for either a limited or indefinite period of time. Pennsylvania does things differently. Here, courts often award a larger share of the property settlement to the spouse who is more financially disadvantaged.

Spousal support, on the other hand, is temporary support awarded to one spouse or the other for the time period while the divorce is still pending.

In either case, our firm will work to obtain a result you can live with.
